For over 35 years, the hurricane research team at Colorado State University has been releasing predictions for its tropical outlook. A storm is named when maximum sustained winds reach 39-73 mph, and hurricanes reach the “Major” category with sustained winds of at least 74 mph. CSU boasts a pretty good track record over the years, although their forecasts are slightly more optimistic than Accuweather, who predicts 5-7 hurricanes for 2019. The good news is that we rarely see a major hurricane in June – 95% of all major hurricanes occur after August 1st. Source: Colorado State University
